TEACHER COURSES

Introducing Genomics to the High School Classroom

TBD

Overview:

NOTE: This workshop is limited to 16 participants.

This intensive, one day free teacher workshop will provide an introduction to web-based bioinformatics tools that can be adapted for use in a high school setting. It will provide interactive instruction on the bioinformatics of genome closure and analysis, and also discuss ways to follow the bioinformatics with actual experimentation.

Targeted to high school instructors who are interested in teaching genomics in their classrooms, this workshop will cover OpGen optical mapping, chromosomal synteny, gap identification in sequenced genomes, primer design, PCR amplification, DNA sequencing, and “data mining” (identification of open reading frames, start and stop codons, motifs, orthologous genes via BLAST analysis, metabolic pathways).

The workshop will be taught by Dr. Steven Slater of the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Participants should be comfortable with the general concepts of PCR and gene cloning, and have basic computer skills.
