Introduction to PCR and Reverse-Transcription PCR Technologies
An introduction to PCR and RT-PCR technologies customized for individuals or groups
Dates
Determined in consultation with Amy Prevost.
Schedule:
Training will consist of modules chosen by the participant. From half day to full day and beyond, depending on need.
Content
Goals:
This practical course is for scientists, teachers, laboratory technicians, researchers and any others who would like to learn more about setting up a PCR or RT-PCR reaction, how to analyze results, how to optimize each reaction and how to troubleshoot problems with the technologies.
NOTE: These sessions may also be structured to be at an intermediate or advanced level.
Objectives:
Objectives are determined by working one-on-one with the participant or group of participants. The techniques will be offered according to your individual goals.
For example, your day may include:
- Total RNA isolation from blood (mouse blood is used)
- DNA isolation from blood or tissue
- By spectrophotometry
- PCR of DNA templates to detect point mutations
- RT-PCR of RNA templates to detect specific gene
- DNA staining and agarose gel electrophoresis
