This is an intensive course which features lectures and lab work at BTCI from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., expected to conclude by 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
Cost and Requirements
$1000 - Industry, medical, clinical laboratory professionals
$750 - Undergraduate & graduate students, post-doctoral candidates.
Content
Goals:
This practical course is for medical technologists and other clinical laboratory professionals who wish to have direct, hands-on experience with basic molecular biology techniques utilized in the clinical laboratory.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course consisting of 40 hours of combined lectures and laboratory, students will be able to:
- Describe current molecular approaches to disease diagnostics and screening.

Isolate nucleic acid from whole blood using a
standard instustrial kit.

Amplify genes of interest for diagnostic
purposes using PCR and RT-PCR.
- Discuss the chemistry and application of high-throughput
diagnostic tools such as microarray and luminescent SNP
detection.
- Perform microarray and microarray analysis.
- Perform real time PCR analysis of gene targets.
- Complete problem solving exercises to demonstrate knowledge of the course material.
- Maintain a professional laboratory notebook for all work completed.
- Total RNA isolation from blood (mouse blood is used)
- DNA isolation from blood or tissue
- By spectrophotometry
- Restriction Enzyme Digestion of DNA templates
- PCR of DNA templates to detect point mutations
- RT-PCR of RNA templates to detect specific gene translocation
- DNA staining and agarose gel electrophoresis
- Microarray and microarray analysis
- Real time PCR analysis
- RFLP analysis

Cancellation
- If you have registered for a workshop but cannot attend, you may transfer the registration to a colleague within your organization, or you may transfer to another scheduled workshop within 12 months of the original. There is no charge for transfers.
- For cancellations made more than two weeks before the start of the workshop, you will be refunded the tuition fee minus a 5% fee.
- For cancellations made within the two weeks prior to the workshop start date, half the tuition will be refunded.
- No refunds will be made for non-attendance or withdrawals after the start of each workshop.
Note: BTCI may cancel or postpone any workshop due to unforeseen circumstances. If this occurs, we will provide full tuition reimbursement. We are not responsible for any related costs, charges, or expenses including imposed penalties by airlines, hotels, or travel agents.
